Renting a car to travel from Dahab/Sharm el Sheikh to Cairo

Wife and I are planning a trip to Egypt, we’re going to fly to Sharm el Sheikh spend a few days diving in Dahab and then travel to Cairo.

We saw that there’s an option to rent a car in Sharm el Sheikh and return it in Cairo, which seems comfortable and flexible to visit some of the sights that are on our way to Cairo like Sinai Mountain.

I know that traffic can be chaotic in Egypt especially in Cairo, but the drop off can be arranged to be in the outskirts of the city. I already drove in Thailand without a problem which is busy as well.

I know that in the Sinai peninsula there are some dangerous areas. We would take the Nuweiba road to go across the Peninsula.

How safe it is to drive from Dahab to Cairo especially in this route? What are the main risks? Would you recommend it to competent tourists?
