Any fashion person worth their salt knows the power of a good accessory — a colorful statement necklace can completely transform an otherwise pared-back look, as can a printed tote bag. Hats are no exception. Blending style with function, the accent has been a defining accessory in recent seasons. “When wardrobes lean refined and understated, it’s the accessories that carry personality, and hats have been leading that conversation beautifully,” says Hannah Zemanek, Helen Kaminski’s head of design. Now, with spring in full swing, a new wave of hat trends is emerging — each made for sun-soaking outings.

Speaking of UV rays, Zemanek points to a growing movement: “As a new generation of content creators embraces fashion through the lens of beauty, skin care, and sun awareness, we’re seeing a deeper understanding of how style and self-care intersect,” she shares. “That cultural shift is significant. It tells us that hats aren’t just a passing trend; they represent a lifestyle mindset.” In other words, while hats add personality to any outfit, they also offer an extra layer of protection for your skin.

This spring’s hat trends run the gamut, spanning breezy raffia styles to retro-coded trucker caps. For a closer look at the season’s buzziest silhouettes, keep scrolling.

Natural Raffia

This season, Zemanek is seeing a shift toward hats crafted from natural raffia. “Designers are embracing raffia in its purest form — undyed, sun-warmed in tone, and rich with natural variations and subtle imperfections,” she shares. “That rawness is precisely what makes these hats feel modern. The focus is craftsmanship and the inherent beauty of something organic and unrefined.” Consider tossing a raffia hat into your suitcase for your next getaway — it’s as practical as it is polished.

Retro-Inspired Trucker

Dating back to the ‘70s, retro-inspired trucker hats — named after American truck drivers, farmers, and rural laborers who first wore them — are gaining momentum. “Nostalgic lids are sticking around, but with cleaner, more minimal logos and designs,” says Brittany Cobb, founder of Flea Style and author of the forthcoming book How to Style a Hat. “They tap into the Y2K wave while still feeling wearable day-to-day.” Indeed, the likes of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie put their stamp on the hat in the early aughts. Recently, celebrities like Suki Waterhouse and Ryan Gosling have welcomed the silhouette back into their wardrobes.

Printed Bucket

Love them or hate them, bucket hats will never fully fizzle out of the fashion scene. And this spring, printed styles are coming in hot, according to Zemanek. “We’re particularly drawn to a longer-brim silhouette, one that can sit low and slightly obscure the eyes for an effortless, slightly mysterious attitude, or fold up to give a nod to ‘90s nostalgia,” she says. Cooper McManus, the creative director of Hat Attack, echoes her, adding, “We’re seeing more color this season, along with textures like crochet and woven patterns, and little details that make them feel more special.”

Fedora

Never dabbled in fedoras? McManus encourages you to give the accent a moment in the sun this season — pun intended. “Classic straw hats will always have a place, but I think people are really gravitating toward fedoras this season,” she notes. “They feel a bit more fashion-forward while still being timeless.” McManus adds that fedoras were the number one style selected during influencer previews, further cementing their rise this season.

Statement Sun

A sun hat is non-negotiable during the spring and summer months. Should you be in need of one, consider nabbing a bold, playful style. “The return of the wider brim feels both purposeful and fresh, delivering essential UV protection while commanding a strong fashion presence,” says Zemanek. “It’s a silhouette that frames the face with intention and instantly elevates even the simplest look.” Opt for a style featuring artisanal textures, playful prints, or vibrant colors.
