Dance floor cleaning and maintenance for longevity
Our take

## Our Take: Investing in the Foundation – Dance Floors and the Bigger Picture Dance Informa Magazine's recent piece on dance floor cleaning and maintenance hits on a surprisingly profound point: the longevity of our spaces directly impacts the health and artistry of our dancers. It’s so easy to get caught up in perfecting choreography, securing funding, or promoting upcoming performances, as highlighted in the recent article [Joy and humor in concert dance: Boston Ballet’s 2026 ‘Spring Experience’] – a reminder of the artistic ambition we constantly strive for – that the essential infrastructure can sometimes be overlooked. A well-maintained floor isn't just about aesthetics; it's a crucial component of injury prevention, performance quality, and the overall well-being of everyone who sets foot on it. Think about it: we, as dancers, spend countless hours pushing our bodies, building strength and flexibility, honing our skills, and creating art. Shouldn’t the very surface we perform on receive the same level of care and attention? I know, as someone who spends a significant portion of my time utilizing a pole for fitness and expression, that the stability and quality of your equipment directly affects your performance and safety. A dance floor is no different. The article correctly points out the significant financial investment studios make in their floors. It’s not an expense to be shrugged off. It's an investment in the dancers’ physical health and the studio’s reputation. A slippery, uneven, or simply dirty floor can lead to strains, sprains, and more serious injuries. Beyond the physical, consider the psychological impact. Dancers need to feel confident and secure in their environment. Knowing the floor is properly maintained fosters that sense of confidence, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the process and push their boundaries. This is especially relevant when considering the demands placed on dancers today, as evidenced by the exciting lineup at the [Lake Tahoe Dance Festival 2026]. Ensuring a safe and supportive environment is paramount to nurturing talent and fostering artistic growth. The stability of a surface allows for greater expression and a deeper connection to the movement. And frankly, from a performer’s perspective, a clean and well-maintained space just *feels* more professional, inspiring a higher level of dedication and performance from everyone involved. It also speaks volumes about the studio’s commitment to its dancers – a message that resonates with students, parents, and potential collaborators alike. The appointment of Lauryn Turner as CEO of DanceOne [Lauryn Turner named CEO of DanceOne to lead next stage of growth] underscores the growing recognition of the importance of strong leadership and investment in the dance community as a whole. But maintenance isn’t just about reactive cleaning; it's about proactive care. Regular inspections, proper cleaning techniques tailored to the specific floor type, and timely repairs are all essential. This requires not just the studio owner's awareness but also the involvement of staff and even dancers. Creating a culture of responsibility, where everyone understands the importance of floor maintenance, can significantly extend the floor’s lifespan and reduce the risk of injuries. It’s a mindset shift – moving away from seeing floor care as a chore to viewing it as an integral part of the dance process, a demonstration of respect for the dancers and their craft. We, as women finding our strength and confidence, understand this concept deeply. Whether it's maintaining our fitness routines, caring for our loved ones, or presenting our best selves to the world, consistent effort and attention to detail yield incredible results. The same principles apply to a dance studio floor. Looking ahead, the increasing focus on sustainability within the dance community will likely drive innovation in dance floor materials and maintenance practices. We may see the emergence of eco-friendly cleaning products, more durable and recyclable floor options, and even smart floor systems that monitor wear and tear and alert studio managers to potential issues. Ultimately, the future of dance spaces hinges on recognizing that a strong foundation – both literally and figuratively – is essential for supporting the artistry, health, and longevity of our dance community.
You’ve spent hundreds, thousands of dollars on your dance studio floor and installation. And as you should! We understand the importance of a good quality dance floor and why this investment is an investment in our dancers’ physical health and the reputation of our studio. So how can you ensure your floor remains in top-notch quality for as long as possible? With some proper cleaning and maintenance, of course!
Here, Dance Informa speaks with representatives from Gerriets Dance Floors about their favorite cleaning products for studio owners to have on hand and how you can keep your dance floors in great condition for long-lasting performance.
Why is proper cleaning and maintenance of a dance floor so important?
Bill Brown and Molly Sugg, Gerriets Dance Floors
“A dance floor is a big investment, and regular cleaning and maintenance help you get the most out of it. Keeping your floor clean not only helps it look its best but also extends its lifespan. With proper care, studio owners can create a safer foundation for their students, save money over time and keep their floors in great condition for years of dancing.”
What cleaning products do you recommend for Marley floors, sprung wood floors and/or recreational center floors?
“VARIO DailyClean and VARIO DeepClean are versatile cleaning solutions that can be used on a wide range of flooring surfaces, including Marley dance floors, sealed wood floors, and stone floors commonly found in dance studios and recreational centers. VARIO Protect is best suited for Marley dance floors and sealed wood floors. It helps preserve the surface, maintain its appearance and extend the life of the floor!”
How often do you recommend cleaning a dance floor at a studio?
“It’s important to follow a regular cleaning routine for Marley dance floors to keep them performing at their best. A non-abrasive daily cleaner, such as VARIO DailyClean, should be used every day or every other day depending on how heavily the studio is used.
For long-term maintenance, VARIO DeepClean and VARIO Protect should be used every 3-6 months to remove built-up dirt, refresh the surface and keep the floor performing its best. VARIO DeepClean can also be used as a spot cleaner for tougher areas of dirt.
In studios where tap classes are held more frequently, more regular use of VARIO DeepClean can help reduce black dust buildup and keep the floor cleaner for longer.”
What are the best steps for dance floor cleaning? How long does this usually take?
“Start by sweeping or dust mopping the floor to get rid of any loose dirt and debris. Then use a non-abrasive cleaner, working in sections so you are not flooding your floor. This will remove your daily dirt and make your deep cleaning easier. For most studios, a regular clean only takes about 10-20 minutes depending on the size of the space and how much use the floor gets. If you’re doing a deeper clean or spot-treating tougher areas, it may take a little longer, but routine care keeps it quick and manageable. In-depth cleaning instructions can be found on our website.”
What are other elements of maintenance that studio owners should do for their dance floors (temperature control, daily sweeping or mopping, daily maintenance)?
“Daily maintenance goes a long way in keeping a dance floor in great condition. A quick dry mop each day helps prevent dust and dirt from building up and keeps the surface ready for use.
It’s also important to keep outside shoes off Marley floors, as this is one of the easiest ways to avoid scratches, scuffs and small damage over time. In addition, maintaining a stable temperature and humidity level in the studio helps the floor perform properly, preventing issues like stickiness, slipperiness or even bubbling in the Marley.”
What’s the best way to remove scuff marks or other scratches from a dance floor?
“Scuff marks are a part of life in a dance studio. It is best to try the VARIO DeepClean and VARIO Protect to remove the scuff, but the best way to deal with it is prevention. Not allowing street shoes in the studio and testing the type of shoes the dancers are using on the Marley beforehand goes a long way to keeping scuff marks off the Marley.”
What do you recommend for slippery floors?
“Slippery floors can be a result of many different factors. Temperature and humidity play a large factor. If you notice your floor is feeling sticky, try lowering the temperature and using a dehumidifier to remove extra moisture. If your floor is too slippery, it may be too cold!
Slippery floors can also be a result of built-up dirt that you may not know is there! Going through a round with the VARIO DeepClean will remove extra stubborn dirt. Following up with the VARIO Protect will give your floor a clean, even textured surface.”
What are some of your favorite products to have on hand for daily dance floor cleaning and maintenance? It’s about to be the summer – studio owners can stock up for their summer programs or get ready for the fall!
“Going into summer is a great time for studio owners to stock up on essentials for daily cleaning! Having the right products on hand makes it much easier to stay consistent with maintenance and keep floors in top condition. VARIO DailyClean is the first product we recommend for everyday use. It’s ideal for keeping dance floors clean, removing daily dirt, and maintaining a safe, well-performing surface for dancers.”
What other tips do you have for dance floor cleaning and maintenance?
“Prevention is key when it comes to maintaining a dance floor. Consistent habits such as daily dry mopping, keeping outside shoes off the floor, and following a regular cleaning routine go a long way in preserving the surface.
It is also important to address issues early, before dirt or residue has a chance to build up. Ongoing care helps ensure the floor performs properly, extends its lifespan and helps avoid more significant maintenance issues over time.”
